Singapore’s national Women’s Masters Hockey team, winners of the 2023 Asian Continental Cup, has secured sponsorship from six international backers ahead of the squad’s first ever 2024 World Cup in South Africa.

The Women’s Over 40s field hockey squad made history when they won gold in last year’s Asian Continental Cup, beating host nation Hong Kong 1-0. It was a dream come true for the Singapore team which reached the finals after beating South Korea 2-1 in a dramatic shootout.

In preparation for the 2024 World Cup, the team has won the support of five key sponsors including global insurance specialists Newline Group, global leader in FX markets, SGX FX, global fintech company LMAX Group, healthcare provider Avant Orthopaedics and the leading global maritime consultancy Solis Marine. The team has also received a donation from Overseas Reinsurance Agents AG.

Robert Pollock, Newline Group CEO, said: “We’re thrilled to support Singapore’s National Women’s Masters Hockey Team in their historic ascension to their first ever World Cup! We congratulate them on their significant accomplishments and support their inspiring vision of increasing the recognition of field hockey as a terrific sport for more women and girls to compete in.”

Over 40s team manager Maxine Chia said: “Our history-making victory in the Asian Continental Cup would not have been possible without the financial support of our sponsors, and the dedication of our coach Wayne Blazejczyk and the players who have to juggle career and family commitments to train and compete.

“Moving forward into the World Cup, we continue to seek every opportunity to inspire even more women and girls to compete in field hockey, a brilliant team sport which delivers results well beyond the game itself.”

Formed last year, the Women’s Over 40s field hockey squad has been training since July and travels to Malaysia in September for a training camp and a friendly match against the Johor State team.

The World Cup team is coached once again by Wayne Blazejczyk assisted by David Ahier who competed for the Singapore Men’s team in the 2023 Asian Continental Cup, winning bronze.

Eighteen players including two goalkeepers will travel to Cape Town for the World Cup which will see 13 teams from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the USA, Australia, Germany, South Africa and New Zealand compete.

The Singapore players selected for the World Cup will be announced shortly.
