Solis Marine contributes to container loss prevention report commissioned by The Swedish Club

Solis Marine has provided expert input regards the common causes of container losses at sea including heavy weather, non-compliance with the cargo securing manual and inadequate training.

The main causes of these incidents is considered in Container Loss, a new publication published by the Swedish Club which uses statistics and case studies to highlight common and avoidable problems.

With the help of experts including Solis Marine, the report provides practical advice on how risks can be mitigated to reduce losses.

Heavy weather in combination with a failure of the crew to reduce speed and/or alter course to alleviate its effect is one catalyst. Solis Marine has investigated a number of such cases.

The general advice provided to mitigate this risk includes the use of weather routeing in combination with the Master’s own judgment when making course alterations, regular visual inspections on deck before, during and after heavy weather is experienced and proper record keeping of actions taken to mitigate losses.
