Alongside April 2020

Welcome to the latest edition of Alongside, the Solis Marine Consultants regular newsletter.

With the spread of the deadly Covid-19 we are currently living in truly extraordinary times with countries across the world now in a state of lock-down. The shipping industry however remains active, as it always does regardless of the challenges faced, and at Solis Marine we have taken steps to ensure we are also able to continue to support our clients. We begin this Newsletter then with an update on our operations world-wide and confirmation that we are very much “open for business”.

We then share some thoughts on what life has been like for our consultants living and working during the crisis in each of four key locations where we have offices; London, Singapore, Shanghai and Rotterdam. Our Rotterdam office is a new addition to our global network and our local General Manager and Fire & Chemicals expert Sander Loef reflects on one of the world’s major maritime hubs.

Sister company Solis Marine Engineering continues to be involved in interesting and innovative projects, including a recent assignment to help clients Tugdock in the design of the world’s first ever road transportable floating dry dock. Meanwhile regular readers of our Newsletter will be familiar with our involvement in ongoing work to bring the 1906 built steam trawler “Viola” back to Hull from her current resting place in The Falklands, and we take the opportunity to provide an update on recent developments.

Based in Singapore Sjoerd Blomsma joined Solis Marine last year bringing, amongst his other areas of experience, additional capability and expertise to our heavy lift and project cargo warranty services. Before the pandemic began Sjoerd played a leading role in supervising the relocation of 28 Keppel shipyard cranes to a new yard and he shares an overview of the operation.

On the recruitment front we are pleased to announce that Scott Lennon has joined the Solis Marine team, based in the UK. Scott is a Marine Engineer with a very great deal of experience as a marine consultant, including many years located in the Far East. Then finally we congratulate our Managing Partner Ros Blazejczyk on being named amongst the top 100 women in shipping, well deserved recognition of Ros’ contribution to our industry and her role in establishing and helping to grow Solis Marine to become a leading marine consultancy.

We hope you enjoy this latest edition of Alongside, but more importantly we hope you, your family and all your friends remain healthy and free of the virus.
