Welcome to our first edition for 2022 of ALONGSIDE, Solis Marine Consultant’s regular Newsletter with views, news and updates from around the Solis Marine Group.

We begin this edition with an article from our guest contributor Mark Williams, MD of Shipping Strategy, one of the members of the Solis Alliance Network. As we start the year Mark offers some predictions for the marine industry in 2022. This is followed by an introduction to Chris Gascoigne, our Head of Marine Engineering Services. Chris shares with us a few highlights from both his career at sea as he moved through the ranks up to Chief Engineer and also from his years in the world of marine consultancy.

As Covid restrictions hopefully continue to be lifted we are looking forward to meeting up again in person with all our clients and friends from within the industry, and one date to add to the diary already is March 30th. You will find details here of how to secure your place for our upcoming lunchtime presentation focussing on evidence gathering for marine cases: strengths and weaknesses.

We were pleased to be able to announce recently that we have joined the Team Humber Marine Alliance as we look to expand both our network of offices and our range of services, and in April this year we will be exhibiting at Offshore Wind Connections 2022. If you are planning to attend do visit our stand.

Next within the Newsletter we have two articles from Master Mariner expert consultant and Solis UK General Manager, Richard Meikle. In the first article Richard discusses aspects of a case where he recently gave evidence concerning a fatal collision between a boat suspected of being used in drug trafficking and a Royal Gibraltar Police vessel. In the second article Richard reflects on improvements in cruise ship safety 10 years after Costa Concordia.

Our Singapore Solis Marine Engineering Senior Naval Architect Jie Zhang provides some insights into the development of offshore mooring systems, with particular emphasis on offshore floating wind platforms. This year is the 100th anniversary of the death of Sir Ernest Shackleton and we end with some recollections from Senior Partner John Simpson on his own exploits on South Georgia.

We hope you enjoy this edition of ALONGSIDE, and we look forward to bringing you news later in the year of the events and celebrations we have planned to mark our 10 years anniversary at Solis Marine.
