On 8 November 2019 Riccardo Gnocchi, one of Solis Marine Consultant’s Naval Architects, was in Genoa for the AIDIM Conference “LATEST CHALLENGES: WAR RISKS AND SANCTIONS” which was held at the Palazzo della Meridiana – Salone Cambiaso in Genoa Italy.

Co-organised by Young Maritime Professionals London and AIDIM Associazione Italiana di Diritto Marittimo, the seminar consisted of two sessions, ‘An Overview of War Risks and Sanctions’ from the prospective of Operators, Ship Brokers, Insurers and P&I clubs and a “Case Study” which involved both the panel and the audience.

Welcome addresses for the event were made by Chairman Prof. Filippo Lorenzon, the Chairman of YMP Ian Woods, the president of AIDIM Giorgio Berlingieri and the president of the Young Group of Italian Shipowners Association, Giacomo Gavarone.

The first session was introduced by Michael Davey from Quadrant Chambers, followed by the P&I prospective presented by Ewa Szteinduchert. The brokers view was given by Alexander Gray from PL Ferrari along with the operator’s view reported by Camilla Barr, Legal Counsel at Western Bulk. Orders to a War Risk Area and Legal Consequences of a War Risk Clause being triggered, was presented by Kevin Cooper, Partner at MFB.

Riccardo introduced the Case Study which reported the case of one tanker involved in a war attack while transiting the strait of Hormuz. The case was on the line of the recent attacks to two oil tankers in proximity of Iranian waters. The second example involved a vessel subjected to possible breach of contract and following sanctions while transiting from a far east port to a port in Singapore to Japan range.

The discussion of the Case Study was then led by the UK representatives of the panel, such as Rory Grout from Stephenson Harwood, Oliver Caplin, Twenty Essex and Ewa Szteinducher from The Standard Club.

The Italian prospective was discussed by Filippo Cassola from Berlingieri Maresca Studio Legale and Simone Moretti, studio Legale Boglione.

The event concluded with a networking lunch where the discussion continued in the delightful surroundings of the Salone Cambiaso in the Palazzo della Meridiana.
